The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is closing specified fisheries in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area (BSAI), effective 0001, Alaska local time, January 1, 2001, according to James W. Balsiger, Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS.
NMFS is prohibiting directed fishing for:
Bogoslof District:
Pollock
Aleutian Islands subarea:
Pollock
Sharpchin/northern rockfish
Shortraker/rougheye rockfish
"Other rockfish"
Bering Sea subarea:
Pacific ocean perch
"Other rockfish"
"Other red rockfish"
Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area:
Greenland turbot/arrowtooth flounder/sablefish by vessels using trawl gear
Rockfish by vessels using trawl gear
Rockfish by vessels using trawl gear in Zone 1
These actions are necessary to prevent exceeding the amounts of groundfish available for harvest on January 1, 2001, as specified by section 209(c)(3) of Public Law 106-554.
As of the effective date of this closure, the maximum retainable bycatch amounts at 50 CFR 679.20(e) and (f) apply at any time during a trip.
These closures are in effect for the 2001 fishing year until further notice.
