NOAA Fisheries Announces Extension of the 2022 Atlantic Mackerel Specifications

July 05, 2022

This action extends the rule that implements the 2022 commercial catch limit of 4,963 mt for Atlantic mackerel permit holders through January 13, 2023.

NOAA Fisheries is setting the 2022 specifications (see table below) for the Atlantic mackerel fishery in federal waters through January 13, 2023.

Effective on July 11, 2022, the allowable commercial catch for 2022 will be 4,963 mt through January 13, 2023.

The most recent management track assessment from the Northeast Fisheries Science Center concluded that the species remains overfished and overfishing increased slightly. We are implementing this closure to minimize additional catch for the current fishing year. A revised rebuilding plan is being developed by the Council.
