Becca Cates

Mariculture Biologist

Becca Cates is a Mariculture Biologist based at the NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center - Ted Stevens Marine Research Institute. She joined NOAA in 2021 to enhance shellfish hatchery capacity in Alaska, evaluate the habitat value of aquaculture, develop monitoring techniques for harmful algal blooms at aquaculture farm sites, and other research in support of the Mariculture Lab at Alaska Fisheries Science Center. 

Becca earned a M.S. from the University of Alaska Fairbanks investigating the effects of habitat structure and sea otter predation on nearshore crab communities. She then spent a year as an Alaska Sea Grant Fellow based at the NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center where she focused on research that promoted the sustainable growth of the mariculture industry in the state of Alaska. She received a B.S. from Western Washington University. In between degrees, Becca taught marine science in Alaska and the Florida Keys.
