Research Scientist, Contractor with the Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean, and Ecosystem Studies

Burlyn Birkemeier is a Research Scientist with the Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean, and Ecosystem Studies at the University of Washington. Burlyn works in collaboration with the Alaska Ecosystems Program of the Marine Mammal Laboratory within NOAA Fisheries. She received her B.S. in Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences and Biology from the University of Washington. Her primary research focuses on the development of innovative machine learning techniques to study population dynamics of Steller sea lions and northern fur seals at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center. Burlyn regularly participates in field research, including Steller sea lion and northern fur seal abundance surveys, and is a FAA certified remote pilot.
