Nichole (Niki) Rossi

Fishery Biologist and Electronic Monitoring (EM) Lead

Nichole Rossi; Fishery Biologist and Electronic Monitoring (EM) Lead for NOAA Fisheries, National Marine Fisheries Service at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center, has led the development and implementation of EM in the Northeast, US, since 2010. Her work focuses on pursuing the advancement and utility of EM in multiple fisheries for the benefit of management and science initiatives.  Through her work with the fishing industry and stakeholders she has worked to develop EM standards for operational programs and has explored EM technological advancements in an effort to promote EM implementation. 

Her current work includes researching technological advancements in EM and Electronic Reporting to develop and incorporate efficiencies into management and scientific practices. Research exploration includes; Machine Learning, algorithm development, data collection tools, software development, reporting tools, hardware technologies, and monitoring techniques.

Nichole is also the Contractor Officer’s Representative (COR) for the Northeast Fisheries Observer Program (NEFOP).  She has been with the observer program since 2008 serving in multiple capacities including: NEFOP management and oversight, program development and support, and seaday execution and collaboration.  

She received her B.S. and M.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Her Masters Research Assistantship was with the United States Geological Survey at the Massachusetts Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit in Amherst. Nichole has worked with numerous federal and state agencies, and non-profit organizations throughout her career and is serving on several national and international EM and fisheries monitoring working groups including: NOAA Electronic Technologies Working Group (ETWG) and ICES Working Group on Technology Integration for Fishery-Dependent Data (WGTIFD).
