Trevor Joyce, PhD

Trevor is a research biologist with Ocean Associates, Inc. and is affiliated with the Cetacean Health and Life History Program at the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, California, where he studies the behavior, ecology, and conservation of whales, dolphins, and seabirds. Trevor began his research career studying seabird demographics in the Aleutian Islands and spent several years working on the conservation of endangered shearwaters and petrels in Hawaii prior to graduate school. Trevor completed his Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) in 2016 and his current research includes:

1. Understanding the role of Arctic sea ice in gray whale habitat use and population dynamics;
2. Advancing gray whale population assessments and spatial risk modeling using Uncrewed Aerial Systems, satellite imagery, and machine learning;
3. Developing artificial intelligence tools to assist in gray whale photo ID matching; and
4. Understanding the behavioral responses of dolphins and beaked whales to naval sonar exposure.

Trevor currently co-chairs the National Seabird Program within NOAA Fisheries and is involved in research on seabird spatial ecology. Trevor also recently taught an undergraduate class in Marine Mammal Biology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
