Recreational and Non-Commercial Fisheries Talk Story
Understanding the NOAA Marine Recreational Information Program and Fishing Effort Survey in Hawaii
About
The Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP) is the angler-state-regional-federal partnership responsible for developing, improving, and implementing surveys that measure how many trips saltwater anglers take, and how many fish they catch. Driven by data provided by fishermen, MRIP produces better information through improved science and, equally important, increased transparency, accountability, and engagement.

Agenda
Purpose
Scientists from NOAA’s Office of Science & Technology in Silver Spring will discuss the MRIP Fishing Effort Survey (FES) concept, and the important roles and responsibilities shared by Federal and State partners. Guest speakers familiar with how the MRIP FES program in Hawaii has evolved over the years will also provide insight about its relationship to efforts to implement a State non-commercial marine fishing registry, permit, or license system.
Note: NOAA's participation in this talk-story is not intended to promote the establishment of a marine recreational and non-commercial fishing registry, permit, or licensing system for the State of Hawaii.
Meeting Co-Chairs:
- Roy Morioka - Hawaii Fishermen’s Alliance for Conservation and Tradition (HFACT)
- Gordon Colvin/Dave Van Voorhees - NOAA Fisheries Office of Science & Technology Fisheries Statistics Division (NMFS/OST/FSD)
