Name That Whale Contest!

February 14, 2024

Help us name our newly identified North Pacific right whale.

Tournament bracket for naming contest

Dive into this exciting naming contest for this rare and elusive North Pacific right whale spotted during last year’s whale survey. North Pacific right whales are the one of the rarest of all large whale species. Scientists estimate that there are fewer than 50 individuals in its eastern population.

On World Whale Day, the public will have a chance at naming this newly identified adult whale. It is estimated to be 56 feet long and its gender is unknown.

Contest Rules

You can submit entries for the Name that Whale Contest from February 18 to February 25, 2024. We will narrow the entries down to the eight most engaging names. Then, a single-elimination bracket tournament with three rounds of voting will begin to determine the name. Each winning name will match up against another in the next round, until the final match-up with the winning name as tournament champion.
