I am excited to announce that July is Habitat Month at NOAA Fisheries. Habitat Month is an annual campaign to celebrate the importance of healthy habitat and their benefits.

This year, we will be focusing on Reconnecting with Habitat. Habitat connectivity, such as opening up river habitat and reconnecting tidal wetlands, is an important part of the work we do. Habitat connectivity is a critical concept in ecology—plants and animals rely on connected habitat to effectively move around their territories, find food, and reproduce. Our approach to habitat conservation also requires strong connections. Everything we do in habitat conservation requires partnerships with all kinds of organizations and they are incredibly important to us. Finally, there are many community benefits from connecting to nature such as outdoor recreation and tourism.

During Habitat Month, we will showcase the value of habitat and the important work of our office and our partners across the country. We will highlight a variety of different habitat conservation projects through web stories and videos. We’ll announce funding for new projects from three grant competitions, and profile staff explaining their different jobs and why they find their work meaningful.

This is an important time to reconnect with habitat on many levels and for many reasons. Please join us all month!
