Protected Species Research Publications
A comprehensive list of NOAA Fisheries’ protected species science peer-reviewed publications are provided below by topic starting with December 2015. Papers may be listed under more than one topic if applicable. New articles are added as they are published.
Journal articles are compiled and highlighted via Science Connect, a quarterly newsletter that disseminates recent marine threatened, endangered, and other protected species research conducted and published by NOAA Fisheries and its partners.
Abundance and Distribution
These publications focus on the the number of individuals and/or density, and where individuals, populations, or species occur geographically.
Behavior
These publications focus on what animals do and how they interact with each other and their environment. This includes both instinctive and learned behaviors such as movement, migration, dispersal, habitat use, foraging, predation, social interactions, communication, acoustic studies, dive behavior, and responses to other stimuli.
Conservation and Policy
General conservation and policy publications that focus on theory, conservation approaches, frameworks, regulations, measuring management success, and setting future priorities.
Ecology and Climate Change
These publications focus on the relationship between organisms and their environment and examine how these relationships respond to changing environmental conditions/climate.
Health
These publications focus on the health and wellbeing of an individual, population, or species. Includes papers on disease, parasitology, infection, strandings, morality events, anatomy and physiology, rehabilitation, toxicity, pathology, and haematology.
Human Impacts
These publications cover a variety of issues resulting from human activities including bycatch in fisheries, previous human exploitation, exposure to toxins and pollution, habitat alterations, entanglement issues, and man-made ocean noise.
Methods and Technology
These publications that focus on new methods and innovative technology used to study protected species in the marine environment. Examples include, underwater acoustics, modelling, tagging, photogrammetry, unmanned aerial surveys, statistical methods, and applications from one field or species to another.
Population Studies
These publications focus on a particular population or group of individuals. Includes population assessments, growth assessments, population size, demography,, and population specific influences, characteristics, and responses.
Socioeconomics and Human Dimensions
These publications deal with how economic activity relates to human social processes and vice versa. Papers summarize interdisciplinary research that incorporates human societal interests in the study of protected species and habitats.
Taxonomy and Genetics
These publications focus on the classification of protected species as well as studies that apply genetic approaches to understanding protected species biology, ecology, and conservation needs.
