Scientists are satellite-tracking seal pups starting in summer 2016 as part of an ongoing study to learn about possible effects of ship traffic on harbor seal populations in a glacial fjord. Early results showed some surprises.
Overall the harbor seal population in Alaskan waters is fairly healthy. But there are some places like the western Aleutian Islands, where harbor seal populations have declined and scientists still don’t know why.
