February 27, 2019

Whale Alert is a free smartphone application for fishermen, recreational boaters, industry partners and volunteer networks to share real-time whale sightings.

Let us know when you see whales

The Whale Alert smartphone app automatically sends whale sightings to a website used by whale biologists and resource managers to better understand whale feeding and migration patterns, and to increase situational awareness to avoid whale and vessel collisions. Everyone is welcome to report sightings, but only mariners with registered cruise ship or ferry accounts can view sightings through the website.

Setting up a website account

You do not need to have an account to report a whale sighting on the smartphone app. If you would like to report and/or view sightings through the website, accounts are available for mariners working on cruise ships and state ferries only.  To obtain access, go to the Maplify website and click on "Sign Up".  Once your account is approved by an administrator, you can login and view recent whale sightings along your route on any computer or mobile device with an internet connection.
