After a 2-year pause, NOAA Fisheries and our partners are excited to announce the return of the Annual Belugas Count! event — Saturday, September 17, in the greater Anchorage area.

Every September, Alaska residents and visitors gather along the shores of Cook Inlet, joining numerous marine mammal experts to look for the endangered Cook Inlet beluga whale.

Beluga Whale Group Sizes in Cook Inlet, Alaska Based on Observer Counts and Aerial Video
Scientists utilize and analyze video recordings to collect more accurate data for beluga whale counts and estimated group sizes. This study also involves annual observer aerial surveys conducted from 1994 to 2000.
