Groundfish Catch Percentage And Value

Alaska groundfish make up a sizable portion or Alaska's yearly catch. Their significance can be seen in the yearly numbers.

  • During 2016, pollock made up 67% of the total groundfish catch off Alaska.  The pollock catch for 2016 was 1,532,100 metric tons (t), up approximately 3% from 2015.
  • The 2016 catch of flatfish, which includes yellowfin sole, rock sole and arrowtooth flounder, was 253,330 t or 11% of the total 2016 Alaska groundfish catch, up about 3% from 2015.
  • Pacific cod accounted for 324,920 t or 14.2% of the total 2016 Alaska groundfish catch.  The Pacific cod catch was up about 1% from 2015 due to increased catch in the Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands that offset declines in Gulf of Alaska catches.
  • Other important species (% of total 2016 catch and % change from 2015) are:  Atka mackerel 55,580 t (2.4%, up 2%), sablefish 10,910 t (.05%, down 7%), and rockfish 70,910 t (3%, up 3%).
