Inseason Action in Ocean Salmon Fisheries, North of Cape Falcon (Westport subarea)

NOAA Fisheries has taken inseason action in the commercial salmon fisheries from Leadbetter point to Queets River (Westport subarea). Modifications are needed to preserve the length of the season and to ensure that the Chinook quota is not exceeded.

  • Effective May 19, 2022. Inseason action #12 modified the Chinook salmon landing and possession limit for the commercial salmon troll fishery in the area between Leadbetter Point and Queets River (Westport subarea) to 150 Chinook per vessel per week (Thursday-Wednesday) starting 12:01 AM, May 19, 2022.

Previous inseason actions for the 2022 ocean salmon fisheries:

  • Inseason action #11 modified the Chinook salmon landing and possession limit for the commercial ocean salmon troll fishery that opens May 1, 2022, from the U.S/Canada border to Queets River and from Leadbetter Point to Cape Falcon, from 75 Chinook salmon per vessel per week (Thursday through Wednesday) to 80 Chinook salmon per vessel per landing week (Thursday through Wednesday).
  • Inseason action #10 modified the quota and subarea catch limits for the commercial salmon troll fishery from the U.S./Canada border that opens May 1, 2022. The May-June quota increased from 15,375 Chinook salmon to 18,000 Chinook salmon, no more than 6,040 of which may be caught in the area between the U.S/Canada border and the Queets River, and no more than 4,840 of which may be caught in the area between Leadbetter Point and Cape Falcon
  • Inseason #9 modified the commercial ocean salmon fishery in the area from Pigeon Point, CA, to the U.S./Mexico Border (Monterey management area), which was previously scheduled to open May 1, 2022. This fishery is now scheduled to open May 1 – 5, 2022, and May 10 – 15, 2022. All fish caught in this area must be landed within 24 hours of any closure of the fishery and must be landed south of Point Arena, CA.
  • Inseason #8 modified the commercial ocean salmon fishery in the area from Point Arena, CA, to Pigeon Point, CA (San Francisco management area). This fishery, which was previously scheduled to open May 1, 2022, is closed.
  • Inseason action #7 modified the commercial ocean salmon fishery from the area between 40°10’ N. latitude and Point Arena, CA (Fort Bragg management area). This fishery, which was previously scheduled to open April 16, 2022, is closed.
  • Inseason action #6 modified the commercial ocean salmon fishery from the Oregon/California border to Humboldt South Jetty. This fishery, which was previously scheduled to open May 1, 2022, is closed.  
  • Inseason action #5 modifies the commercial salmon troll fishery in the area from Humbug Mountain, OR, to the Oregon/California border (Oregon Klamath Management Zone). This fishery will close at 11:59 pm on April 30, 2022.
  • Inseason action #4 modifies the commercial salmon troll fishery in the area from the Heceta Bank Line, OR, to Humbug Mountain, OR. This fishery is now scheduled to open at 12:01 am on May 1, 2022 – 11:59 pm on May 15, 2022.
  • Inseason action #3 modified the commercial ocean salmon fishery from Cape Falcon, OR, to the Heceta Bank Line, OR. This fishery will close at 11:59 pm on May 15, 2022.
  • Inseason action #2. Effective March 14, 2022. The recreational ocean salmon fishery from Latitude 40°10' N to Point Arena, CA, previously scheduled to open on April 2, 2022, is delayed through May 1, 2022. This area is scheduled to re-open for recreational fishing on May 1, 2022, at 12:01 am.
  • Inseason action #1. Effective March 15, 2022, at 12:01 a.m. The commercial troll salmon fishery previously scheduled to open on March 15 in the area from Heceta Bank Line (Lat. 43°58′00" N) to Humbug Mountain (Lat. 42°40'43'' N) is closed through April 30, 2022. This boundary is located between Cape Falcon, OR, and Humbug Mountain, OR, as described in the 2021 ocean salmon regulations under footnote C11., Requirements, Definitions, Restriction, or Exceptions, dividing the area consistent with the Northern Oregon and Central Oregon port analysis areas at the Heceta Bank Line. This area is scheduled to re-open to commercial troll fishing on May 1, 2022, at 12:01 a.m. The May 1, 2022, opening could be modified following Council review at its April 2022 meeting.
