Andrew Shelton, Ph.D.

Background

Andrew (Ole) Shelton joined the Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) in 2012 as a fisheries research biologist.  Prior to joining NOAA, he was a post-doctoral scholar at University of California, Santa Cruz, and the Center for Stock Assessment Research with Marc Mangel (2009-12). Ole received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago's Department of Ecology and Evolution in 2009. At Chicago, he researched the reproductive biology, population dynamics, and community ecology of surfgrasses (Phyllospadix spp.; marine seagrasses native to the west coast of the US) with Cathy Pfister.  Ole has a B.A. in Biology from Brown University.

Current Research

Ole is a quantitative ecologist and a member of the Nearshore Ecology Team. He both develops and applies methods to understanding the abundance, distribution, and trends in marine species. Recently work includes developing spatio-temporal models to understand the ocean distribution of Chinook salmon, the abundance and distribution of west coast groundfish species, and trends in eelgrass habitats in Puget Sound, Washington. In collaboration with researchers at NWFSC and the University of Washington he contributes to the development of methods for using environmental DNA to survey marine communities. He is also a research diver for NOAA and contributes to eelgrass and kelp forest surveys.
