Barry C. Smith
Barry's research includes developing productive and reliable ways to grow algae, especially marine microalgae, for aquaculture applications and potential uses in other industries such as extractable compounds and biofuels using process control, automation, and improving culture strategies and methods. He also adapts cross-field technologies for use in aquaculture development.
He is currently monitoring the growth of the seaweed aquaculture industry in the New England area to identify how NMFS/Milford can help.
Barry investigates the life cycles of Dinoflagellates that are associated with Harmful Algal Blooms, their behavior, and their long term survival in nature.
As NOAA Diving Supervisor, he oversees safe diving operations by NOAA divers in the Northeast.
