Breena Apgar-Kurtz, a Climate and Communities Social Scientist with the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, is working with Dr. Marysia Szymkowiak on assessing Gulf of Alaska fishing communities’ vulnerability to climate change as part of the Gulf of Alaska Climate Integrated Modeling Project.
For this project Breena is using the capital assets framework to assess fishing communities’ vulnerability to climate change. She and Dr. Szymkowiak will be conducting community meetings and stakeholder interviews to identify strengths and weaknesses in each of the community capitals in order to help communities plan for future climate induced changes and shocks.
Breena received a MMA in Marine Affairs from the University of Washington and a BS in Marine Biology from the University of Rhode Island.
