Kirby moved to Juneau after getting a degree in biology from DePaul University in Chicago. After spending a bit of time leading whale watching tours in Juneau and the Caribbean, she became a contractor (and eventual federal) at Auke Bay Laboratories in the genetics program. At Auke Bay Laboratories, she performs a variety of genetics lab work and purchasing duties. On her off time, Kirby enjoys sliding down snowy hills, slappin' the bass in the Juneau Symphony, and hanging out with her small dog.
