In 2021, the US commercial fishing industry netted 8.5 billion pounds of seafood at a value of $6.2 billion dollars. This represents a 30% increase in value compared to 2020 and represents the single most profitable year for the commercial sector on record.
As COVID restrictions were relaxed, the commercial industry was able to improve on its 2020 landings – up by more than 116 million pounds. This is an encouraging sign that the industry is rebounding.
Dutch Harbor, AK took the top spot for the 25th consecutive year in terms of landings at 745 million pounds on the back of Alaska Pollock. New Bedford, MA solidified its place as the top port in terms of value for the 22nd consecutive year at $569.7 million due to a robust sea scallop harvest.
Maintaining high commercial fish landings and values is good news for fishermen, fishing communities, and for the Americans who want sustainable, healthy U.S. seafood. As we navigate through a post-COVID world. NOAA Fisheries will continue to work with our regional fishery management councils and stakeholders alike to ensure the sustainability and economic stability of our nation’s fisheries.
