The Cooperative Research Branch seeks commercial hook and line fishermen and for-hire charter fishermen to provide input on best fishing practices for a Hook and Line Survey to be piloted in spring 2024.

Are you a commercial hook-and-line fisherman or a for-hire charter fisherman who:
- Is interested in keeping our region’s fisheries sustainable and fishing businesses successful
- Wants to help design and participate in a pilot study to help identify alternative fish survey methods for sampling in offshore wind energy areas
- Would like to show us how hook-and-line fishing is really done
Then we want to hear from you! The Northeast Fisheries Science Center’s Cooperative Research Branch will host a series of workshops in November 2023 for commercial hook-and-line fishermen and for-hire charter fishermen to share their expertise and help shape the future of fisheries surveys in the northeast region.
Areas developed for offshore wind farms will be difficult or impossible to access using our traditional survey methods. That means we need to find alternatives to collect fisheries data for stock assessments. A hook-and-line survey might be one way. To test this alternative, we’re developing a pilot hook-and-line survey that will use jigging machines in different habitat types and in close proximity to wind turbines.
This is a great opportunity to be heard and to collaborate on a project that helps keep our region’s fisheries sustainable and fishing businesses successful in areas that might be affected by offshore wind development. We want to hear your thoughts on:
- Tackle selection and leader designs (please bring in your leaders)
- Fishing operations
- Vessel specifications
- Possible industry vessels to utilize as survey platforms
- Survey timing and sampling areas
