Do you know someone deserving of special recognition for outstanding leadership and achievements in the conservation and restoration of our nation's wetlands? If so, we invite you to nominate them for one of six achievement and recognition awards: Youth Leadership, Scientific Research, Promoting Awareness, Local Stewardship, Wetlands Program Development, and Business Leadership.

We are seeking nominations for the 32nd Annual National Wetlands Awards now through December 23, 2020. See the nomination form and more information about award eligibility.

The National Wetlands Awards Program, administered by the Environmental Law Institute, has honored more than 200 wetland champions since its establishment in 1989. The program honors individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the conservation and restoration of our nation's wetlands. NOAA Fisheries has been a partner to the program since 1999, and we continue to support and acknowledge the significant wetland conservation work represented through these awards.

Six individuals received a 2020 National Wetlands Award and were acknowledged in a month-long digital campaign. Sam Lovall, a long-standing NOAA partner on Detroit River habitat restoration efforts, was recognized in the Local Stewardship category for his efforts to restore river habitats in southeast Michigan. As a Project Manager for the Friends of the Detroit River, Sam has successfully completed Great Lakes Restoration Initiative projects funded through NOAA at several locations in the Detroit River.

This year’s award recipients will be honored during American Wetlands Month in May 2021. This is a great opportunity to nationally acknowledge partners who are helping with the important work of conserving and restoring our nation’s wetlands.
