The Rarity of Depth Refugia from Coral Bleaching Heat Stress in the Western and Central Pacific Islands

Some researchers have suggested that corals living in deeper reefs may escape heat stress experienced by shallow corals; however, results of analyzing in situ temperature records suggest otherwise.

Natural Variation in Coral Reef Trophic Structure

Using a combination of small‐ and large‐scale surveys, we consider how fishing alters the trophic structure among coral reef fish by assessing those impacts to understand how and why that structure varies naturally across scales.

The Ecology of Coral Reef Top Predators in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument

Coral reef habitats in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument are characterized by abundant top-level predators such as sharks and jacks.

Structure and Development of Hawaiian Deep-Water Coral Communities on Mauna Loa Lava Flows

Submarine lava flows on the leeward flank of the Island of Hawai‘i, USA, were examined by submersible and remotely operated vehicles to understand the structure and development of deep-water coral communities.

Is Seeing Believing? Diver and Video-Based Censuses Reveal Inconsistencies in Roving Predator Estimates Between Regions

To better understand regional differences, we compared shallow-water roving predator abundances and estimated predator length-frequencies between 2 diver-based visual assessment methods.

Shining a Light on the Composition and Distribution Patterns of Mesophotic and Subphotic Fish Communities in Hawaiʻi

This study contributes to a better understanding of fish community structure in deep waters around the Hawaiian Islands.

Progress on Implementing Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management in the US

In this paper, we review example cases where scientists have had success in using ecosystem analysis and modeling to inform management priorities, and identify practices that help bring new ecosystem science information into existing policy processes.

Achieving social and ecological goals of coastal management through integrated monitoring

A discussion of integrated monitoring as a coordinated long‐term process in which scientists from multiple disciplines collect and analyze biophysical and social data to meet shared objectives of tracking, assessing and understanding changes over time in social and ecological systems and their interactions.

Can Herbivore Management Increase the Persistence of Indo-Pacific Coral Reefs?

Coral reefs are unlikely to persist in their current form unless climate change can be addressed. Here we consider a potential solution and find herbivore management can have a role to play to reduce the threats that currently imperil coral reefs.

Can Herbivore Management Increase the Persistence of Indo-Pacific Coral Reefs?

With a focus on Indo-Pacific coral reefs, we review what is known about the underlying processes of herbivory and coral-algal competition that ultimately affect the ability of corals to grow, persist, and replenish themselves. We then critically assess evidence of effectiveness or otherwise of herbivore management within marine protected areas (MPAs) to better understand why many MPAs have not improved outcomes for corals, and more importantly to identify the circumstances in which that form of management would be most likely to be effective.
