Pacific Offshore Cetacean Take Reduction Plan Regulations

Overview

Authority
Marine Mammal Protection Act
Action Status
Interim Rule
Effective
02/22/1999

Summary

These rules will allow acoustic deterrent devices to be deployed farther away from the net in the California/ Oregon drift gillnet fishery (CA/OR DGN fishery). The intended effect of this action is to allow acoustic devices to be more safely and efficiently attached to drift gillnets.

In addition, the initial rule requires new training, equipment, and gear modifications for operators and vessels in the California/Oregon drift gillnet fishery for thresher shark and swordfish to reduce the level of mortality and serious injury of several marine mammal stocks that occur incidental to fishing operations.
