NOAA internships are a great way for college students to explore careers in marine-, environmental-, and climate-related fields. Our summer interns work with NOAA experts for roughly 12 weeks during the summer. Interns gain valuable experience, boost their resumes, and try out a potential career. And they also contribute to NOAA’s mission!
The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office is teaming up with the Chesapeake Research Consortium to offer five Chesapeake-focused internships through two internship programs in summer 2023. These paid internships will run from mid-May through mid-August. While the February 20, 2023, application deadline has passed, these position descriptions provide a look at the kinds of internships the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office may offer in the future.
Chesapeake-Student Recruitment, Early Advisement, and Mentoring Program
The Chesapeake-Student Recruitment, Early Advisement, and Mentoring program is for students who identify as people of color and/or are first-generation college students. These internships are for undergraduate students who will enter their sophomore, junior, or senior year of college this fall. They are also open to recent college graduates, including graduate students. There are two areas of focus for this program.
Community Partnerships
This intern will assist with strengthening relationships and collaboration between NOAA and Indigenous communities. They will contribute to the development of tribal resource guides. These guides will provide accessible information about NOAA resources and funding opportunities, especially in the Middle Peninsula of Virginia. This will be a hybrid position, with some virtual work and some in-person work, including travel to rural coastal areas of Virginia (southeast of Richmond).
Habitat Science
This intern will help our field team collect fish biodiversity data in support of the Poplar Island restoration project. Much of this work is conducted on or from boats. The intern will use various methods to collect fish; with this data, the intern will quantify fish species composition and link it with habitat features. This in-person internship will be based out of Oxford, Maryland.
NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office Summer Internship Program
The NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office Summer Internship Program engages college students in working and learning about science, policy, and education. These internships are for students who will enter their sophomore, junior, or senior year of college this fall. If in person, these internships will be based in Annapolis, Maryland.
Field Technician
This intern will work with our field team, supporting operations on the water and on land. The intern will help operate and maintain a newly deployed dissolved oxygen monitoring system and the Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy System. They will assist in implementing a new way to assess the health of restoration projects. This is an in-person position based out of Annapolis or Oxford, Maryland.
Climate Change Education
This intern will help develop and implement environmental literacy programs focused on climate change. This will include identifying and analyzing interdisciplinary climate change curriculum and supporting professional development programs. This can be a hybrid (virtual and in-person) or completely in-person opportunity. In-person elements will be in Oxford, Maryland.
Climate Change and Fish Habitat
This intern will help synthesize scientific information related to climate and will work with researchers and stakeholders on tracking marine heat waves. This will be a hybrid internship, with the intern working in the office 1-2 days each week and virtually the other days. In-person days will be in Annapolis, Maryland.
