A Tutorial to Assist Observers in the Field Identification of Corals

This short presentation is designed to assist groundfish observers in identifying corals to the order level in the field. It is essentially a more detailed version of the two-page coral guide provided as part of the observer identification manual. Representative specimens are on the display in the glass case near the observer training room in Seattle.

North Pacific Observer Duties

Fisheries observers are biologists who work independently to collect a wide range of information onboard commercial fishing vessels and at shoreside processing plants receiving fish from Alaskan waters. Observer information is used by NOAA Fisheries and partner agencies to manage commercial fisheries in the North Pacific. Observers are deployed by permitted providers for up to three months at a time.
