Sea Turtles
There are six sea turtle species found in U.S. waters, all of which are listed and protected under the Endangered Species Act. Learn more about sea turtles and the work of NOAA Fisheries and partners to protect and conserve these animals.

Green Turtle
The green turtle is the world's largest species of hard-shelled sea turtle. They are unique among sea turtles in that they are herbivores, eating mostly seaweed, seagrasses, and algae. Learn more about these marine reptiles.

Kemp's Ridley Turtle
Kemp's ridleys are the smallest sea turtle in the world. They are primarily found in the Gulf of America while juveniles can be found in the Atlantic as far north as Nova Scotia. Bycatch presents the greatest threat. Learn more about these marine turtles.

Olive Ridley Turtle
The olive ridley gets its name from the olive green color of its heart-shaped shell. The species is among the smallest of the world's sea turtles. On some beaches, thousands of females come ashore together to nest. Learn more about these marine reptiles.

Loggerhead Turtle
Loggerheads are the most abundant species of sea turtle found in U.S. coastal waters. They are named for their massive heads and strong jaws which they use to eat hard-shelled animals like whelk and conch. Learn more about these marine reptiles.

Leatherback Turtle
Leatherbacks are the largest turtle in the world and are named for their tough, rubbery skin. They are highly migratory, some swimming over 10,000 miles a year between nesting and foraging grounds. Learn more about these marine turtles.

Hawksbill Turtle
Hawksbills are found in the warm waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. Their diet consists mainly of sponges that live on coral reefs. Threats include worldwide losses of reef habitat and nesting area. Learn more about these marine reptiles.
