Harbor Seals: Aerial Surveys Over Maine, Tagging In Virginia

The Northeast Fisheries Science Center recently completed an aerial survey of harbor seals along the entire coast of Maine, the first since 2012. A NOAA Twin Otter aircraft covered the area in six days, surveying nearly 1,000 locations during harbor

Faces of Sea Turtle Conservation: Dr. Cali Turner Tomaszewicz, National Research Council Research Associate

A new technique developed by three NOAA Fisheries scientists is giving us more insight than ever before on sea turtle populations, extracting life history and other information from sea turtle bones. The technology combines bone dating, or “skeletochronology,” and the sequential sampling of annual growth rings in sea turtle bones to identify chemical signatures including stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios. Meet the scientists behind this new technology and how it is helping guide the way we protect and conserve sea turtles.

2018 NOAA Fisheries Summer Surveys to Collect Data Crucial to Manage Alaska Fisheries and Monitor Alaska Marine Ecosystems

NOAA Fisheries-Alaska survey season off the Alaska coast is underway. Scientists use collected data to monitor trends and abundance of fish, crab and other species taken in commercial, recreational and subsistence fisheries throughout Alaska and to support biological and ecological studies. Under federal law, NOAA Fisheries is responsible for monitoring and managing marine resources in federal waters.
